After a very successful test year in 2010 I have decided that this series needs to become "legit" and thus will be a fully sanctioned series in 2011. WEC/CMRC have agreed to bring the XSprint into their portfolio of great events. Very exciting indeed!!

So what has changed for 2011?

1) The name of the series has changed from the Dirty Bikes Enduro Sprint Championship to the DIrty Bikes XSprint Championship. DB will be running the series with sanctioning from WEC/CMRC. Also I removed the word "enduro" as the feedback from many racers was that the event was more of an extreme sprint race rather then enduro.

2) Format change: the main format will remain unchanged however we have added a bar-to-bar format called Full Throttle.

3) New class: Due to the growing poplarity of the e-bike I have added an e-bike class for the XSprint.

So what the heck is the Dirty Bikes XSprint Championship?

The XSprint is Ontario's first enduro sprint series. The series is based on the FIM Enduro tests and will reward the fastest, all around racer. The WEC XSprint welcomes enduro, cross-country and motocross riders.

What’s the format for each event?

The XSprint Championship uses a new, simple and easy to understand format. All competitors ride a lap made up of three special tests, and no trail, between four and 5 times. Riders simply go from the pit area to the waiting zone and from there head to the start area before completing a lap. Riders set off at 30-second intervals. Once a test is completed it’s back to the pit area. When the last rider finishes a lap the first starts again. Riders will have about 10-15 minutes to ready themselves between laps.

The XSprint Full Throttle is a bar-to-bar version of the standard XSprint. Full Throttle uses the same tests as a standard XSprint however the entire lap is timed rather than each individual test. All competitors ride multiple laps in a moto and multiple motos at each FT race. The total time of all laps is used to determine placement.
Riders simply go from the pit area to the start area and line up by class. There may be several classes in a moto, however racers only race against their class as there will be staggered starts (ie if Pro and Vet Pro race the same moto Pro starts first and after a set time interval Vet Pro class will start). Depending on the number of entrants, racers will have between 30-60mins between motos.

How many laps of the special tests will each rider complete?

The number of riders competing and the length of the test itself will ultimately determine the number of tests ridden in a day. As a guide all riders will complete four to 5 laps. That might not sound like much but with each test being approximately 20 minutes in length it’s equal to a club motocross race each time out. A total of 1-2 hours of riding is what every competitor can expect on each day.

For FT the number of laps will be depending on the course length. Typically there will be between 3-5 laps per moto with 15-20mins for the full moto. There will be 4-5 motos each event.

Do I have to be an experienced enduro rider to compete?

Not at all. The minimum requirement is that a competitor is 16 years old, which means no small bikes (ie 105cc or more). In the future we may add a youth or family class. After that it doesn’t matter if you’re an enduro rider or a motocross rider, you’re welcome to compete. However the XSprint won’t feature any ‘trail time’. It’s all about exciting special test racing.

What Do I need to compete?

1) A WEC/CMRC XC or a CMRC MX compeition license. The WEC/CMRC XC License is $70 plus HST and can be purchased online (follow this link for info on the license http://www.worldendurocanada.com/cross_country.htm) or at the race.

2) A transponder. Each XSprint is e-scored using the WEC state of the art e-scoring system which requires the purchase ($40) or rental ($20 with $40 depoosit) of a transponder. The transponder can be purchased or rented at the race.

How many classes are there, which one should I compete in?

The DB XSprint has been designed to be simple. We will follow the WEC class structure (except with only 2 Pro classes).

Pros will have one class:
Pro Open (any bike)
Vet Pro (40+)

Amateurs will be divided into 6 classes:
A (advanced skill)
B (intermediate)
C (novice)
Vet (40+)
Super Vet (50+)
Ladies

New for 2011 is the addition of an E-Bike class. Only e-bikes may compete in this class.

How does the XSprint differ to the traditional Canadian Enduro Championship?

The biggest difference is that there will be no liason trails between tests. You will have more tests and thus more opportunity to find out where you need to improve and adjustments throughout the day. The XSprint is a great way to prepare for a full FIM style enduro (ie the CEC)

Also everything happens in one location. Once you arrive and park up in the pit area that’s where you stay all day. You’ll be very close to the start/finish of the special tests and from there the special tests will be easily accessible. There’ll be exciting action going on throughout the day.

Do I need to walk the special test before the event, on Friday or Saturday morning?

That’s entirely up to the individual. Obviously, the more serious you are the greater the likelihood that’s what you’ll want to do, but it’s not essential. We understand that taking time off work isn’t always easy, which is why all events will run the first lap without scoring. If you do want to look at the special test beforehand you’re free and welcome to do so from mid-day Friday.

Do riders have to stick to a time schedule?

No, not like they do at a traditional enduro. Once at the event and having completed signing on riders will be allocated their transponder. Riders will then be informed when practice and racing starts.

What are the courses like?

They’re all different but will all have certain things in common – they’ll feature a mixture of different terrain, be safe, challenging and enjoyable, as well as being clearly and professionally marked out. Dirty Bikes Forum and WEC website will have detailed information on the courses as the dates draw near.

Do I need an enduro bike?

No, not necessarily. Both enduro and motocross bikes can be used, but strict FIM sound regulations will be enforced (currently 96db but may be changing). Bikes don’t need to be road registered as no part of the special test uses public highways. Bikes do not have to have lights fitted.
